Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke has made history as the oldest Daytime Emmy winner ever – at 98 years old.

The actor, comedian and dancer celebrated his groundbreaking win by dancing a merry jig on the red carpet.

Cinema’s most famous chimney sweep won the 2024 Daytime Emmy award for his guest spot on the US soap opera Days of Our Lives. That makes Dick, born in 1925, the oldest actor to ever be nominated… let alone score the Daytime Emmy win.

He played amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux for the role otherwise known as Mystery Man – which he took on after a friend of his suggested that he take the part.

‘I said great and it snowballed into this… I’m 98 years old. Can you believe it?’ the star cracked.

Just as remarkable is how Dick chose to celebrate his win – taking to the red carpet with a merry jig.

A video shared to X shows the showbiz legend strutting down the red carpet, laughing and joking as he celebrated the win.

’98 year old Dick van Dyke is pretty happy with his 6th Enmy win!’ wrote journalist Angela Bishop as she shared the footage.

Fans in the comments below Angela’s post were appropriately impressed, sharing their astonishment at his continued sprightliness.

‘I feel like a spy from nighttime television,’ Dick said of his win. ‘I’m the oldest nominee in history. I can’t believe it. I was playing old men all my life.

‘If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!’ joked the actor, who has four children and seven grandkids.

The now-nonagenarian is best known for his performance as chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins and as inventor Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

He hosted his own sitcom in the 1960s, called The Dick Van Dyke show, which ran for 158 episodes and won 15 Emmys, including one for his performance in the show.

He won his previous Daytime Emmy in 1984, for his part in the children’s show CBS Library. This adds to a list of awards which includes four Primetime Emmys, a Golden Globe, Tony and Grammy – plus star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In a career which continued to flourish well into old age, he also starred as sleuth doctor Mark Sloan in the television series Diagnosis Murder between 1993 and 2001.

In 2018, Dick appeared in the Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns, playing the banker Mr. Dawes Jr.

Here, he showed that he still had the fancy footwork – performing a fast-paced jig on the desk of his office.

Last year, the USA broadcaster CBS celebrated his 98th birthday with the show Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic.

Earlier this week, he was spotted with his wife, Arlene Silver, 52, as they shared a laugh and a joke while on an outing together.

The pair married in 2012 after initially meeting in 2006, having met at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

‘She started as my make-up artist and ultimately worked her way up to wife,’ the actor joked.
