Fury as council ties ‘tags of shame’ to recycling bins filled with wrong items | UK | News

Locals have been left fuming after “tags of shame” were attached to their bins after the wrong items were put inside.

Former Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove had already branded a row over collections by South Kesteven Council in Lincolnshire as “bin-gate”.

Residents complain the local authority’s new waste system is too complicated with three separate bins to sort their rubbish between.

There’s a black bin for household waste, a purple one for paper and card as well as a silver wheelie for plastic bottles, glass and foil.

Bin crews have now started tying warning labels to bins which haven’t been filled correctly, sparking uproar among some of the locals.

Natalie Thompson posted on Facebook that she had received “a tag of shame” for recycling carrier bags and white bin liners, which were full of recycling.

She said: “The tag advised that bags were non-recyclable and not able to be processed. It is contradictory because the council give out bags you can buy for extra recycling.”

Paul Cassata posted: “They tagged our bin without even opening it – gotta get me some of the x-ray glasses they’ve kitted out the refuse collectors with!”

The council’s Deputy Chief Executive Richard Wyles previously warned residents that from June 10 bins would not be emptied if they contained non-recyclables.

Mr Wyles thanked those who were carefully sorting their recyclables, adding: “This co-operation is helping us get to a position where we can recycle as much as we possibly can from what is put in the bins.”

He continued: “We have been open and transparent in saying silver bin collections from the week beginning Monday June 10, may be rejected if bins contained non-recyclables.”

South Kesteven Council said it would also be collecting bin data to understand what residents still find puzzling and where it can help.

Mr Wyles said: “Anyone whose bin is tagged, or who has any waste or recycling questions that need answering, can talk to our staff. They are all well-briefed and have information leaflets available if required.”

Mr Gove weighed in on the saga earlier this year when he demanded an apology for residents whose bins had been left overflowing.

He wrote on X: “South Kesteven District Council has had great Conservative representation in the past, but I am concerned about Ashley Baxter, the Independent leader, that the bingate scandal still hasn’t had an appropriate answer or apology”.
