Gas prices up in Canada; U.S. drivers get ‘ultra-rare’ summer discount

Gas prices rose a little less than a cent on average across about 80 Canadian cities. South of the border, an “ultra-rare summer double-digit weekly drop” gave drivers a break to kick off the summer driving season.

According to data firm Kalibrate, the average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities nationwide increased 0.9 cent between June 6 and June 13 to $1.642. Sarnia, Ont. and Gatineau, Que. saw the biggest gains, at 10.6 and 7.2 cents per litre, respectively. The biggest drop was in Kingston, Ont., at 8.4 cents per litre.

“Gasoline, diesel, and even jet fuel demand is down,” Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst at Oshawa, Ont.-based En-Pro International, wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “This is thanks to an intimidated consumer pummelled by high interest rates and ballooning inflation.”

In the U.S., consumers were treated to an “ultra-rare” discount, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. He notes a US$0.10 per gallon week-over-week drop in America’s average price of gasoline.

“We’ve seen one of the larger weekly drops in the national average price of gasoline in some time, and what incredible timing that it comes at the beginning of the summer driving season,” De Haan said in a post this week. “This price decline party is ramping up, and I expect additional declines ahead of July 4 for both gasoline and diesel prices.”
