Landon Donovan’s bizarre haircut at Euro 2024 has been explained as the former LA Galaxy and Everton footballer confirmed he had a ‘procedure’.
The United States legend went viral on social media for all the wrong reasons on Monday as he worked as a Fox Sports pundit for Austria’s match against France.
Donovan was spotted with huge gaps in the side of his hair – leaving patches of his scalp exposed – while it was growing at much different rates in other areas.
Fans were left baffled at Donovan’s haircut with some poking fun at the American and ridiculing him while others expressed genuine concern over his health.
His long-term ex-LA Galaxy teammate Mike Magee has now revealed the truth behind the haircut – a hair transplant procedure – which appears to have failed after Donovan was told it ‘wouldn’t show up on camera’ for his punditry work.
Magee posted a text message conversation between himself and Donovan on X as the former wrote: ‘LD check Twitter ASAP and prob fire your barber.’
Donovan replied: ‘Where were you 7 hours ago??? Had a hair transplant procedure two weeks ago and was told it wouldn’t show up on camera.’
Magee goes on tease Donovan and then asks if he is allowed to post their conversation on social media, to which Donovan says: ‘Whatever, I deserve it.’
Donovan is widely regarded as one of the best footballers in American history and holds the record for the most international assists – with his tally of 59 higher than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
He is the joint top goalscorer in the history of the United States men’s national soccer team – tied with former Fulham and Tottenham star Clint Dempsey on 57.
The 42-year-old spent most of his career with LA Galaxy, where he played with David Beckham and produced 136 goals and 101 assists across 310 games.
Donovan also featured for a number of top European clubs, starting his career with German side Bayer Leverkusen.
At LA Galaxy, Donovan spent time out on loan at Bayern Munich while he had two separate loan spells playing for English side Everton in the Premier League.
