When Brexiteer, Nigel Farage, appeared in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last year, it caused quite a stir when his wife didn’t greet him at the end of the bridge, but his girlfriend did.
The 60-year-old has had two marriages, and is now with girlfriend Laure Ferrari who he met when she, while working as a waitress, served his table. The pair hit it off and the Reform leader offered the waitress a job in parliament, in charge of environmental concerns, and helped propell her career within France’s nationalist political circle.
The politician, who is making his eighth attempt to secure a parliamentary seat in the general election on July 4, has been married twice.
His first wife, Grainne Hayes, was his nurse following a car accident in 1985 when he was hit by a Volkswagen Beetle after a night out at the pub – one of his many near-death experiences.
He and Grainne eventually got together and tied the knot in 1988. They had two sons together – Samuel, born in 1989, and Thomas, born in 1991. However, their marriage didn’t stand the test of time, and they divorced in 1997.
Farage quickly turned his attention to European politics, and romance followed suit as he fell for Kirsten Mehr, his German secretary whose £27,000 yearly wage was covered by the public purse. They married in 1999 and speculation of infidelity swirled.
The couple then had two daughters, Victoria in 2000 and Isabelle in 2005. Kirsten reflected candidly on family dynamics, acknowledging that while Farage’s time at home was sparse, the television was their window to watch him.
Moving onto his connections with Laure Ferrari, the French waitress who turned her hand to politics, the usually outspoken Farage was somewhat reserved. In an interaction with The Mail on Sunday, he described Ferrari as someone he had “known well for a long time”, stating he simply extended a helping hand because she needed a lodgings for a week.
Laure herself confirmed to the same tabloid: “I have no trustworthy friends in London who could have hosted me. I asked and he accepted. He is just trying to be helpful.”
At Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017, Ferrari was present with Farage. For added insight, in 2023 Mr Bloom told The Times: “I knew that there was a romantic attachment, I would say probably in 2011 or something of that nature.”
While she’s stepped back from political glare, Ms Ferrari remains Farage’s staunchest supporter and confidante. The couple share a quaint life in a Kent village with their two Labradors, Pebble and Baxter.
