The 20-year-olds, who lived at Headington, Oxford, were cornet players and shared the prize for best musicians at the Royal Green Jackets School of Music at Shrewsbury.
Their mother, Gill, told the Oxford Mail in 1986: “The commanding officer said he had given them the prize jointly because he couldn’t find any difference in their musical ability.
“The Queen Mother said it was the first time she had presented a prize to identical twins. She was absolutely fascinated by them.”
The twins, described in the Oxford Mail headline as a ‘Pair of Royal Puzzlers’, later joined the regimental band at Warminster, Wiltshire.
