Yankees’ Gerrit Cole to start Wednesday vs. Orioles

The New York Yankees are set to get their ace back.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters Monday that reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole will return to the team and make his first MLB start of the season on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Cole made three rehab starts in the Yankees’ minor-league system after beginning the year on the 60-day injured list due to nerve inflammation and edema in his right elbow.

In 12.1 rehab innings, Cole allowed just one earned run and struck out 19 hitters.

In 2023, the 33-year-old won his first career Cy Young, pitching a 2.63 ERA with 222 strikeouts in 209.0 innings.

The Yankees entered play Monday with a 50-24 record — good for the top mark in MLB.
